Infants and Toddlers
For the youngest children, ages infant to 2 years, summertime is a good time to find water-proof books. Children spend time in the tub and pools and it is a great time to have them "read" while cooling off. Several books have been adapted to bath time and are printed for that purpose. Fisher Price publishes a set of books - Look What I See that are vinyl and perfect for this age.
Eric Hill has a set of vinyl books that children this age love:
- Hello Bee Hello Me
- The Rainbow Fish
- Spot Goes Splash!
- Spot's Bath
- Splish Splash
Beatrix Potter has vinyl books that have been favorites over the years:
- Splash Peter Rabbit
- Jemima Duck
- Peter Rabbit
Two-Year-Old to Five-Year-Old Children
At these ages, children enjoy all the old favorites including:
- The Very Busy Spider, Eric Carle
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle
- From Head to Toe, Eric Carle
- Let's Count, Tana Hoban
- In The Meadow, Olive Wadsworth
- Little Blue and Little Yellow, Leo Lionni
Five-Year-Old Children
At this age, a child enjoys a chapter book with parents or teachers sharing the reading with the child. Art and field trips can also be used to enhance the stories. Some suggestions are:
- Junie B, Jones Series, Barbara Park
- Matilda, Roald Dahl
- John, Paul, George and Ben, Lane Smith
- The Curse of the Bologna Sandwich, Melvin Beederman
